2008 YOUTH SPEAKING
2008 Youth Speaker Receiving Certificate From Manager Ryan Canart
Congratulations to Danielle Morton for representing the UARCD at the provincial youth speaking contest held on December 3rd 2008 at The Manitoba Conservation Districts Association 33rd annual convention. Danielle, from Miniota, represented the Upper Assiniboine River Conservation District and she spoke to the large audience in Brandon about alternative energy options including biodigesters. Each year, prior to the convention, the UARCD holds speaking competitions for students in grades 9 through 12. This year two local students participated in our local presentations. The board and staff would like to thank both Danielle, and Nicole Peel for the time and effort put into their speeches. Last year, 2009, we were unable to attract any area students to participate in our local youth speaking competition. We are going to keep trying again this year. The CD is trying to get involved in our local schools by offering many hands on experiences. Highlights from the past include: Land and Water Management Program in Fort LaBosse School Division; Critter Dipping; Tree Planting; Classroom presentations on recycling, environmental issues, water and soil health. We welcome any opportunity to work with students, community groups and organizations on any project that benefits our environment.
UARCD conducts an annual youth speaking competition for grade 9-12 students throughout the district. Students must speak for approximately 5-7 minutes on a conservation-related topic. Cash prizes are awarded to participants. Local competitors must be residents of The Upper Assiniboine River Conservation District. Winners from each conservation district compete, at the MCDA's Annual Forum, for the provincial title. Thank you to all have supported this program by participating, judging, helping or sponsoring.
